Available on BBC Radio 4 every Friday, in May/June 2025 at 2.15pm and available right now in full on iPlayer, Jack Lowden presents a brand new drama-documentary written by Colin MacDonald on the rise and fall of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The series contains contributions from our own much-loved historian Alistair Moffat who tells of Bonnie Prince Charlie or Prince Charles Edward Stuart in his best-selling history, The Highlands and Islands of Scotland and in War Paths: Walking in the Shadows of the Clans. His voice is synonymous with Scottish history and instantly recognisable. Alistair covers this period too in in his major history of the country, Scotland: A history from Earliest Times.

Maggie Craig, widely known for her ground-breaking histories histories, also contributes to the series. Her books for Birlinn concentrate on the social history of Red Clydeside but she is well known too for Damn’ Rebel Bitches: The women of the ’45 and Bare Arsed Banditti: The men of the’45.
