Independent Bookshops – PART 3

Scotland is filled with excellent independent bookshops, from city centres to the Highlands and Islands. At Birlinn we hugely value our relationship with these innovative booksellers and their shops. In the run up to Christmas we’d like to take the time to highlight Scotland’s fantastic bookshops for you.


FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, 20 High Street, Linlithgow, EH49 7AE


Located in the heart of the High Street, Far From The Madding Crowd is Linlithgow’s Award-Winning bookshop, a unique shopping destination full of beautiful and unusual products. You can browse an extensive selection of books, gifts, high quality stationery, and more. The shop hosts a varied events programme throughout the year, and also boasts a handy Vistor’s Guide for anyone visting Linlithgow.


NIGHT OWL BOOKS, 1 Bridge Street, East Linton, EH40 3AG


Night Owl Books opened in East Linton in April 2022, with the aim of serving the needs of their local community by offering a place to discover books in person, attend live events, and connect with others. Alongside books, Night Owl also stocks a selection of carefully curated gifts that are produced by independent businesses, and serve take-away coffee roasted locally by Hometown Coffee.


KESLEY’S BOOKSHOP, 63 Market Street, Haddington, EH41 3JG


Kesley’s is a charming little bookshop that is situated in the picturesque down of Haddington, East Lothian. Kesley’s is stocked with a great selection of books, gifts, games, cards and gift wrap for all ages, and also boasts a coffee shop serving snack lunches, cakes, tray bakes, coffee, tea and soft drinks. Pop in for a browse and a bite to eat while you search for that next Christmas gift!


INKSPOT AND SILVERLEAF BOOKSELLERS, 76-78 South Street, Bo’Ness, EH51 9HA

Inkspot & Silverleaf Booksellers is a nationally renowned, independent bookshop in the heart of Central Scotland. They stock a broad range of books for children and adults, as well as gift vouchers, National Book Tokens, greetings cards and stationery. Since the shop first opened in 2008, they’ve twice been named one of Britain’s ‘Top 50 Bookshops’ by The Independent newspaper, and been featured in several local and national newspapers.
