Independent Bookshops, Edinburgh – PART 2

  18 Nov '22   |  Posted by: Birlinn

Scotland is filled with excellent independent bookshops, from city centres to the Highlands and Islands. At Birlinn we hugely value our relationship with these innovative booksellers and their shops. In the run up to Christmas we’d like to take the time to highlight Scotland’s fantastic bookshops for you.

TYPEWRONGER BOOKS, 4a Haddington Place, Edinburgh EH7 4AE

Typewronger Books is Edinburgh’s smallest bookshop and can also boast to be Scotland’s only typewriter repair station. The store stocks new books, independent publications and zines. It is home to a small but beautiful community of readers, writers, artists and musicians, and hosts a lively events programme throughout the year. Owner, Tom Hodges, was hailed as a ‘hero’ by actor Tom Hanks for keeping typewriters alive.

RARE BIRDS BOOK SHOP, 13 Raeburn Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh EH4 1HU

Opened in August 2021, the Rare Birds Book Shop is Scotland’s only bookshop dedicated entirely to women’s writing, with a curated selection of new, noteworthy, bestsellers and favourite books. This store is also home to the hugely popular Rare Birds Book Club, founded in 2017. Dedicated to championing female authors, the club now has thousands of members stretched across 23 countries.

ARGONAUT BOOKS, 15-17 Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH6 8LN

Argonaut Books is Edinburgh’s newest bookshop. Sitting at the bottom of Leith Walk, it’s a large, beautiful space with plenty of room for browsing. With local tea and coffee on offer alongside a massive range of handpicked favourites, it is a great place to find your next read. With a wide range of book launches, discussion groups, board game nights, spoken word evenings and more, Argonaut is a fine addition to Edinburgh’s bookshop scene.

THE PORTOBELLO BOOKSHOP, 46 Portobello High Street, Portobello, Edinburgh EH15 1DA

The Portobello Bookshop is located in what was formerly a fishing tackle shop (Mike’s Tackle Shop) for 30 years. Opening its doors in July 2019 after extensive rennovation, and withstanding the onslaught of COVID-19, the shop is now a staple of Portobello’s High Street. A general bookshop with a team of dedicated, enthusiastic staff, they have curated an original, diverse and lovely selection of books across most genres. Their online shop can be found here.
