Hebridean Journey author captures the beauty of this National Geographic favourite

National Geographic has selected the Outer Hebrides as the only location in the UK in their ‘Best of the World’ to visit in 2025. This annual list of must-see destinations is handpicked by their explorers, photographers, and editors. They highlight the Outer Hebrides’ ‘dramatic landscapes and Celtic heritage’ as reasons to visit, in a list including far-flung locations such as the Suru Valley in India, Barbados, and Guadalajara, Mexico.

The beauty of the Outer Hebrides is explored in depth in the book Hebridean Journey by Brigid Benson. More than a guide book, it offers insights, hidden gems, and key information about these extraordinary islands, accompanied by stunning photography.

Brigid Benson is a bestselling author whose previous book North Coast Journey offered an alternative to the many ‘North Coast 500’ guidebooks in the market, emphasising instead the benefits of slow tourism. ‘Please resist the temptation to hurtle around, skimming the surface and ticking off a list. Far more rewarding to travel gently and connect more deeply,’ Brigid writes in Hebridean Journey. With travel to these islands increasing year-on-year and bosses from NC500 promising to crack down on irresponsible tourism, Brigid’s ethos is ever more important.

Hebridean Journey offers a wonderful starting point for readers to plan their exploration of the Outer Hebrides, whether they have yet to visit this part of the world or they are seasoned explorers. This book was shortlisted for the Scottish Nature Photography Book Awards for the quality of its stunning images, all captured by Brigid on her travels.
