Alexander McCall Smith and Scotland Street on BBC’s The One Show

A much anticipated interview with Alexander McCall Smith was aired on BBC’s The One Show this evening. You can watch it here  (towards the end of the programme, starting at 23mins in). It is short but a real treat!

Alexander met with the quite wonderful and hugely respected broadcaster Angela Rippon in the autumn of last year. Together the two walked the streets of Edinburgh, visiting favourite haunts – the real Scotland Street, the Cumberland Bar, Calton Hill with its glorious open views looking out over the hills of Edinburgh and down to Princes Street, Stewart Christie on Queen Street, and finally onwards to see his quote carved into the stonework on the city’s Conference Centre (‘This is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again‘). They talked about the inhabitants of Scotland Street, Scotland (and Edinburgh in particular) as inspiration and home, and Alexander’s poetry. The result is shown on BBC’s The One Show.

A full day of filming is reduced to 5 minutes on screen but we hope you will enjoy it along with some of these candid pics taken along the way.
