We are very proud to announce that the Saltire Society have longlisted three of our books for their annual literary awards in the Non-fiction category. Our longlisted books showcase the range of our publishing schedule and the incredible talent of our authors. Drystone: A Life Rebuilt by Kristie De Garis is a remarkably frank yet funny account of survival and resilience, a powerful work that confronts the stark realities of motherhood, racism, and trauma, while Witches: A King’s Obsession by Steven Veerapen tells not only the story of James VI and I’s witchcraft trials, but also the cultural impact of witches through history. To See Ourselves: A Personal History of Scotland Since 1950 by Alistair Moffat rounds off our three longlisted books, and tells of the remarkable changes in Scotland in the author’s lifetime, from healthcare to housing, the arts to the environment and everything in between.

Our academic imprint John Donald is also recognised by the Research award longlist, in its longlisting of Judith Jesch’s The Saga of the Earls of Orkney. This is a brand new translation, and the first by a female translator, of the Orkneying Saga, which uses an innovative approach to presenting medieval sources to non-specialist audiences, and provides rare glimpses of culture and everyday life in northern Scotland when it was central to the Viking diaspora.

Best of luck to each of these four authors, and a huge congratulations on the achievement of being longlisted!
