Today the Saltire Society announced the shortlist for Scotland’s National Book Awards industry awards, and we are delighted to be shortlisted for Publisher of the Year!

The Publisher of the Year Award supports Scottish publishing and aims to recognise and promote the work of Scottish publishers as an important element in the ecology of Scottish Literature. The 2023 Shortlisted publishers are 404 Ink, Acair, Birlinn, Canongate Books, Charco Press and Edinburgh University Press.

Our Deputy Managing Director Jan Rutherford responded to the news of the shortlist: ‘We are delighted to be recognised on the shortlist for Publisher of the Year 2023. The outstanding effort from team members during and after the very difficult years of the Pandemic are paying off with innovative tech advances and partnerships pushing sales to new markets. That takes guts and imagination and we have brought both to the table. Export and rights are performing particularly well, our authors are scooping well-deserved awards, our team is back out in force delivering a robust programme of events in bookshops, standalone venues and at festivals.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our wonderful team for their professionalism and dedication – that team including of course not only our treasured in-house experts but the freelance editors, illustrators and designers who we have worked with over many years and most of all our authors who trust us to give their books the best possible chance.

We have been a vital part of the publishing industry in Scotland for more than 30 years. In that time we have been tireless champions of Scottish writing, Scottish illustration and the stories from Scotland’s history and environment. We are pushing boundaries, welcoming new authors from diverse backgrounds and celebrating the strength of the arts in our small country. It has not been an easy journey and there is much in the sector that needs attention and support… but tonight, we are simply delighted to be shortlisted for this much appreciated award.’

Winners of all of Scotland’s National Book Awards will be announced in Glasgow on the evening of 7 December at an event attended by the judges, shortlisted authors and publishers.  The ceremony will be live-streamed and tickets to watch online are available on here.
