Muriel Spark

The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith features in the Herald’s newly published list, The 50 Scottish Books You Must Read, alongside Polygon bedfellows, Whisky Galore by Compton Mackenzie, The 39 Steps by John Buchan, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark and The Driver’s Seat also by Muriel Spark (justified by the Herald as follows: ‘Spark may be best known for Jean Brodie, but this is her greatest work, and one of the finest novels of the 20th century. That’s why she’s the only writer to appear twice on this list.‘). Hoorah!
