Wigtown Book Festival: Steven Veerapen

The Wisest Fool by Steven Veerapen
Performance: Thu 28 Sep – 15:00 UK

Everyone thinks they know who James VI and I was, yet everyone has a different man in mind. This significant British king, the first to rule over a United Kingdom, has endured a mixed reputation, from inveterate witch-roaster, smelly sovereign, and colourless man behind the authorised Bible bearing his name, to drooling fool whose speech could barely be understood. Join us for a conversation setting the record to rights, as Steven Verrapen lays a welter of scurrilous, assumptions penned by James’ political opponents to rest and casts fresh light on this monarch. His James is a complex, idealistic, misunderstood man whose dreams outpaced reality.

“A page-turner for lovers of history.” Philippa Gregory
