Wigtown Book Festival: Jo Caulfield

The Funny Thing About Death by Jo Caulfield

Performance: Thu 28 Sep – 16:30 UK

Growing up in the 1970s, Jo Caulfield just wanted to be like her big sister Annie, who was witty, spiky, and greedy for life. They were unconventional kids coming of age on air force bases, and attending convent boarding schools, where they never fitted in. Both went on to work in entertainment, Annie as a screenwriter and broadcaster, Jo as one of Britain’s most popular comics. Then one year, mid-tour, she received the news that Annie had cancer. She joins us to talk about Annie’s life, death, and legacy.

“Big laughs, rare insight and heartbreak – I loved this special book.” Graham Norton

“Where do you start with the death of a beloved sibling? I wish I’d started on page one of Jo’s book. She navigates the treacherous waters of bereavement and its unpredictable behaviour and emotions in this open, funny, sad, wry and highly readable gem.” Jo Brand

About the author: Jo Caulfield is one of the best stand-ups in the country, regularly headlining the biggest comedy clubs. She has written for Graham Norton, Ruby Wax, Ant and Dec and others.
