Wigtown Book Festival: Alistair Moffat (Glasgow: A New History)

Alistair Moffat, Glasgow: A New History

In this engaging talk, one of our best-loved historians tells the story of Scotland’s largest city. He begins at the river Clyde, which made the city flourish. From there he’ll be your guide for a trip across time, from the kingdom of Strathclyde to the Union of 1707 when Glasgow gained access to an empire and business boomed.

You’ll hear about the arrival of immigrants from the Highlands and Ireland, Jews fleeing persecution and, later, Asians who transformed the way we eat. From football to architecture, heavy industry to politics – never forgetting the distinctive sense of humour Glasgow is renowned for – Moffat celebrates the most vibrant of cities which has never been afraid to reinvent itself.
