Talk
Merryn Glover at Jesmond Community Festival
Friday, May 16
7:30 – 9:30pm
Holy Trinity Church, Churchill Gardens, Jesmond NE2 1HB
Authors are always told that a good story needs one central character: one protagonist who sets out on the hero’s journey, battles obstables and adversaries, then finally emerges triumphant at the end.
But what happens when authors break the rules?
What happens when there are two central characters? Or even three?
Join author, Merryn Glover, as she explore how and why she did just that, exploring multiple perspectives and more than one key figure at the heart of her three books – and her current work in progress.
Her first novel, A House Called Askival, is set in the Himalayan hill station where she went to school. Spanning 70 years of India’s recent history, it is ultimately the story of a troubled father and rebel daughter seeking reconciliation.
Her second, Of Stone and Sky, is the tale of a Highland shepherd who disappears, leaving a strange trail of his possession heading up into the mountains. His story is told by his foundling foster-sister and prodigal brother.
Her third book is the non-fiction work, The Hidden Fires: A Cairngorms Journey with Nan Shepherd in which she follows the Modernist Aberdeenshire author in her exploration of the ancient mountain range at the heart of Scotland where Merryn now lives. In a response to Shepherd’s iconic work, The Living Mountain, she enters a conversation across time, charting her own very different journey into the same landscape.
Merryn’s talk will include images from the settings of all three books, and there will be plenty of time to ask questions, chat with her and socialise over wine and nibbles.
She will also have copies of all her books for sale – cash and card payments accepted.
This event is hosted by Holy Trinity Church as part of the Jesmond Community Festival 2025.
