Boswell Book Festival: Rosemary Goring

There have been many books on Mary Queen of Scots but none that tell the story of her Scottish years through the often dramatic and atmospheric locations and settings where the events that shaped her life took place including Linlithgow Palace, Stirling Castle, Holyrood Palace, Dundrennan Abbey and Edinburgh Castle.

Homecoming also examines the part Scotland, and its tumultuous court and culture, played in her downfall bringing into vibrant focus some lesser-known, intimate details about the young Queen that make her wholly relatable today, showing her to be likeable, intelligent, courageous but lacking in judgement.

As the author of a recent book on the role of women in Scotland’s history, Rosemary Goring has a unique perspective on this most famous Queen who lived in her homeland for just twelve years.
