Appledore Book Festival: Mollie Hughes
Record-breaking adventurer and motivational speaker Mollie Hughes, who was born in Devon, has explored some of the wildest environments on earth. In 2017 she broke the world record for becoming the youngest woman to climb both sides of Mount Everest, aged 26, and in 2020 became the youngest woman to ski solo to the South Pole, a journey of over 700 miles. In Breathe, Mollie uses her extreme experiences to give valuable lessons that can be applied to more everyday challenges. She will show you how to unlock your potential, regulate emotion, overcome fear, cope with psychological pressure, and understand the importance of silence and headspace in our mental wellbeing.
About the Author: Mollie Hughes is a world record holding mountaineer, adventurer and motivational speaker. Born in Torbay, Devon, she first fell in love with the mountains at the age of 17 when she joined a school expedition to climb Mount Kenya. Throughout the rest of school and university Mollie would save up as much money as she could in the year and then spend it all on an expedition over the summer. In May 2012 she successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest from the South side. Five years later she also climbed the North side, the youngest woman in the world, and the first English woman, to successfully summit from both sides of the world’s highest mountain. In 2019 Mollie set off on her most ambitious expedition to date, skiing solo from the coast of Antarctica to the Geographic South Pole. After 58.5 days and 650 hours of skiing alone in whiteouts, storm-force winds and temperatures hitting minus 45C, Mollie reached the Geographic South Pole in January 2020, achieving her second world record in the process. She began speaking to schools and corporate groups in 2012, and has since delivered motivational talks to over 50,000 schoolchildren in the UK, and well-known businesses including Baillie Gifford, Santander and Sky.
