The Islay Book Festival: Alan Warner

(THIS EVENT HAS NOW PASSED)

Nothing Left to Fear From Hell

Sunday 10th September

10:30am @ Gaelic College, Bowmore

The last time Alan Warner visited Islay – where his own mother was born – was in the mid-1990s, and it was to talk about his first novel Morvern Callar, which soon became an instant classic. Alan’s new book Nothing Left to Fear From Hell, in which he reimagines Bonnie Prince Charlie’s famous Hebridean escape, has been gathering outstanding reviews since its publication in the spring – “Visceral, vulgar, vivid, by turns comic and grotesque” (The Herald); “Written in carefully crafted prose shot through with cleverly-deployed alliteration and assonance” (The Scotsman). Alan will be interviewed by author and documentary-maker Les Wilson, whose first ever documentary more than 40 years ago was about… following Charlie’s tracks in the Hebrides!

Chaired by Les Wilson

This event costs £5 with a concession price of £3.50.

Alan Warner’s debut, Morvern Callar, is a contemporary classic; both it and The Sopranos have been made into famous films. Winner of the Somerset Maugham award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and a former Granta Best Young British Novelist, he now teaches at the University of Aberdeen.
