Birlinn Ltd, Scotland’s leading independent publishing house, are looking for an outstanding, inspirational, dynamic and well-connected individual to work in our Publicity and Marketing department. In this pivotal role, the successful candidate will help the company to build on recent success and drive forward.
This busy position will involve ambitious collaborative planning across Birlinn’s broad fiction and non-fiction lists to achieve far-reaching coverage through broadcast media, print and social platforms for individual authors and titles and our year-round events programme. The right person will work to support the Publicity and Marketing Director while also leading on a series of initiatives which will involve both internal and external working collaboration. As a key point of contact for media, this is an exciting opportunity and one in which you will help identify and approach platforms working to explore and offer coverage to the areas in which we publish.
Our ideal candidate will have experience of working within a communications field and will have good existing working relationships within the media, and a successful track record delivering publicity and marketing initiatives in the arts sector. They will have experience of working with authors (or others in the arts) and will be organised and proactive. In addition to relationship building, the job involves writing content for websites, blogs and newsletters, writing advertising copy and press releases and co-ordinating campaigns for a wide range of platforms, supporting publications and freelance journalists to use our stories. It also involves working closely with colleagues in production and sales and the monitoring and measuring of effectiveness of marketing initiatives.
This role involves working across our varied and exciting imprints, including Birlinn (Scottish and UK general interest), Polygon (literary fiction, poetry, and crime), Arena Sports, BC Books (children’s books), and John Donald (academic). This job is an excellent opportunity to work in a forward-thinking publishing house with a track record of delivering effective campaigns for writers including Muriel Spark, Alexander McCall Smith, Denise Mina, Jenni Fagan and Roseanne Watt, among many of the other brightest names writing today.

Hours of work: The nature of the role requires some flexibility with occasional communications across time zones and outwith normal working hours. The contracted hours are full-time equivalent which can be worked on a flexible basis.
Our team is based in Edinburgh and while we are currently working remotely we hope to return to hybrid office/home-based working in early 2022. While some remote working is anticipated, regretfully we cannot consider fully remote applicants.
Salary: £25k per annum, plus pension, holiday allowance and benefits
