Today is publication day for A Scurry of Squirrels: Nurturing the Wild by Polly Pullar! Polly has had a passion for red squirrels since childhood. As a wildlife rehabilitator, she knows the squirrel on a profoundly personal level and has hand-reared numerous litters of orphan kits, eventually returning them to the wild. In this book she shares her experiences and love for the squirrel and explores how our perceptions have changed. Heavily persecuted until the 1960s, it has since become one of the nation’s most adored mammals.
In our launch video, filmed on Polly’s farm in Perthshire, she speaks to BBC Radio Scotland’s Mark Stephen about her work rehabilitating wild animals, and the changing attitudes towards ‘rewilding’ and red squirrels in particular. There is also a special guest appearance by red squirrel Tommy Dewar, who was found outside Aberfeldy Distillery and is currently being rehabilitated by Polly.

Polly also appeared with red squirrels Pipkin and Helen on the BBC’s Landward in a segment showing their release back to the wild. Catch up on iPlayer here. A Scurry of Squirrels is now available to buy in your local bookshop or on our website.
