Dr Ian MacDougall

It is with great sadness that the Birlinn team report the death of our author, Dr Ian MacDougall. Mairi Sutherland, Academic Managing Editor for the John Donald imprint, wrote the following tribute:

Dr Ian MacDougall, the author of many books of social history over the last thirty years, died on Saturday 11 April 2020. Ian had a long association with Birlinn, Mercat and Tuckwell Press and was well known to many in the company. A long-standing research worker of the Scottish Working People’s History Trust, he worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to record, edit and publish memories of working people from the twentieth century, which would otherwise have been lost. His recent books include Voices of Scottish JournalistsVoices of Scottish Librarians and Voices of Scotswomen in Peace and War. In bringing stories such as these to the public eye, he has left a valuable legacy.

A full obituary by Ian S Wood, who said of Ian MacDougall, that he was ‘one of the finest and most productive Scottish historians of his generation’ ran in the Scotsman newspaper and can be found here.
