Patrick Laurie at Topping & Co.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT FUTURE EVENTS.
Desperate to connect with his native Galloway, journalist Patrick Laurie plunges into work on his family farm in one of the most isolated parts of the country. There he discovers a vanishing landscape: commercial foresting has been driving the decline of both the native species and farming traditions of his homeland. When Patrick begins investing in Riggit Galloways, one of oldest and most traditional breeds of Galloway cattle, he stumbles upon an ancient rural heritage, and, perhaps, a solution.
Patrick’s book, Native, offers a fascinating look at how cows once shaped people, places, and nature in this remote and half-hidden place, and how they can do so again. Weaving together folklore and science, tradition and progress, Native is a moving and personal tale about man’s love of, and simultaneous destruction of, nature. We’re delighted to have him join us at the bookshop for a fascinating look at modern Scottish farming.
